somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond by e.e. cummings
somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond any experience, your eyes have their silence: in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me, or which i cannot touch because they are too near your slightest look easily will unclose me though i have closed myself as fingers, you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens (touching skilfully, mysteriously)her first rose or if your wish be to close me, i and my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly, as when the heart of this flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending; nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals the power of your intense fragility:whose texture compels me with the color of its countries, rendering death and forever with each breathing (i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands |

Sonnet XIII by Elizabeth Barrett Browning AND wilt thou have me fashion into speech The love I bear thee, finding words enough, And hold the torch out, while the winds are rough, Between our faces, to cast light on each? I drop it at thy feet. I cannot teach My hand to hold my spirit so far off From myself—me—that I should bring thee proof In words, of love hid in me out of reach. Nay, let the silence of my womanhood Commend my woman-love to thy belief,— Seeing that I stand unwon, however wooed, And rend the garment of my life, in brief, By a most dauntless, voiceless fortitude, Lest one touch of this heart convey its grief. |

The Heart of a Woman by Georgia Douglas Johnson The heart of a woman goes forth with the dawn, As a lone bird, soft winging, so restlessly on, Afar o'er life's turrets and vales does it roam In the wake of those echoes the heart calls home. The heart of a woman falls back with the night, And enters some alien cage in its plight, And tries to forget it has dreamed of the stars While it breaks, breaks, breaks on the sheltering bars. |

I found this old file in one of my laptop folders. Thought I'd share it (even if only now). I wrote it the morning after I took a series of heart tests at Makati Med, because of a so-called "heart murmur" diagnosed, on all days, last Valentine's Day.
It just occured to me that the date of writing is also ironic. Or maybe not--maybe the date, coupled with the day before, put me in the mood. I don't pretend that this is any sort of a good work, but I just want to share the usual dose of convoluted-ness, sarcasm and melancholy.
***
20 August 2007 9AM 2D-Eco Heart Test @ Makati Med. SPLOSHPHHT My heart makes squidgy, squishing noises like the sound that water makes when a grown-up tramps through shin-deep flood raising one leg up with bended knee restraining a tantrum through gritted teeth and brings it down, splosh! and brings it down, splosh! oh, bring it down, splosh! (or the sound could have been of lava boiling) and there's the strange sporadic hiss of something spraying a cat, annoyed, is about to pounce or a tire has already burst... splosh, splosh! phhht! phhhht! goes the racket of my heart the lady at the heart machine furrows her brow at the noises she tinkers around at the great steel board and frowns at the fluctuating screen She wanted to listen to my heart. she, in that professional blue coat wanted to listen to my heart Sploshphhht!

"Beezelbub has descended upon the earth, and her name is Marion Bartoli, a.k.a the French Fat Ass." --- Vida
Henin had lost a set. And was losing another one. Swiftly, clearly, and Goddamnf*cking unbelievably.
Bartoli. One winner there. Another winner there. And ANOTHER winner there. And another winner----THERE! Marion Bartoli was absolutely outplaying Justine Henin. Absolutely and unflinchingly. Henin was blown away.
And one year of waiting, one year since last year's Wimbledon final when Amelie Mauresmo took the title after Henin had taken a set. Half a year since Maria Sharapova hopped about center court at the US Open after downing Henin in straight sets. Less than a month after the beautiful 2007 French Open (oh, I still remember the Jankovic semifinal and feast upon the sight of all that trademark Henin tennis glory!). Less than two days after that astounding Wimbledon semifinal VICTORY over Serena Williams.
This. Marion Bartoli. I'd never even seen her before. The semifinals at Wimbledon. The one f*cking Grand Slam Henin needed to get everything there is to be gotten in tennis. The world number one. Henin. My Justine Henin. Losing to a virtual unknown. Losing to a fat butch virtual f*cking UNKNOWN.
And all I could think about was: What a fantastic sports story this would make.
What a fantastic story!

The Makers by Howard Nemerov Who can remember back to the first poets, The greatest ones, greater even than Orpheus? No one has remembered that far back Or now considers, among the artifacts, And bones and cantilevered inference The past is made of, those first and greatest poets, So lofty and disdainful of renown They left us not a name to know them by.
They were the ones that in whatever tongue Worded the world, that were the first to say Star, water, stone, that said the visible And made it bring invisibles to view In wind and time and change, and in the mind Itself that minded the hitherto idiot world And spoke the speechless world and sang the towers Of the city into the astonished sky.
They were the first great listeners, attuned To interval, relationship, and scale, The first to say above, beneath, beyond, Conjurors with love, death, sleep, with bread and wine, Who having uttered vanished from the world Leaving no memory but the marvelous Magical elements, the breathing shapes And stops of breath we build our Babels of.

I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, And I've been secretly falling apart, I'll see. To me, you're strange and you're beautiful, You'd be so perfect with me but you just can't see, You turn every head but you don't see me.
I'll put a spell on you, You'll fall asleep and I'll put a spell on you. And when I wake you, I'll be the first thing you see And you'll realise that you love me.
